Project 15- Search Engines

Carfax
  • Carfax is an online search engine specifically for cars. You can search a specific car you may be interested in to see if it has had any wrecks, flooding, any kind of mechanical work, etc. You can also narrow is down to certain number of owners. I have had many friends go through this site before they bought a new car, simply because its safer to know these things.
  • Craigslist is a website where people in your local area sell things. You can sell anything from cars to horses on this site, the variety never ends. I have personally sold things from this website and its very handy. It can also be very dangerous. There are documentaries and many murders that have came from this. I wouldn’t use it now, but it came in handy right when it came out.
  • Apartment finder is a popular apartment finding website. I used this for the recent apartment I started renting. You can narrow it down from money, bedrooms, area, etc. It shows you pictures of the apartment complex, ratings, floor plans and much more. It comes in handy, especially since you don’t have to drive to all of these apartment complexes.
eBay
  • eBay is a popular shopping website. People can search for almost anything, and an item will show up for sale. You can make an account and post your personal belongings for sale. One thing I love about eBay is that top companies have partnerships with eBay. They also have their own credit cards, and memberships for customers who shop a lot.
  • Wolframalpha is a search engine I have personally never heard of until I started this search. You can change the background color to make it more appealing for you, search, and also upload photos and files. I did a simple search, “Is 1729 divisible by 13?” and it told me the correct answer, true. If you enter in math problems, it will help you solve them as well. I think Wolframalpha would be best for getting help with homework and learning about certain things like libraries and schools.
  • Blekko, in my opinion, is an entertainment search engine. When you pull it up, it shows the trending searches across the bottom with the pictures. You can also make an account with Blekko. It shows in quick answers, top results, videos, latest news, gossip, social, lyrics, and many more. I think this site would be useful if you are doing research on a specific celebrity.
  • Snagajob is a website you use to search for certain jobs. On the website, you can search for different types of jobs, locations, and also post jobs. I have personally used this website, through my last job. I worked at Applebees and you had to do your applications off of this website. I think this is very helpful in many ways. I really like that you can not only narrow it down to your zip code, but also the kind of job you prefer.
  • Ratemyprofessor is a website where students post about the professor they had for specific classes, at specific universities. I have used this website since I started college. It shows comments from other students and their ratings of that teacher. It also shows the overall easiness, average grade, clarity, helpfulness, and ‘hotness’ of the teacher. You can definitely tell its a college students website.
