Since this was first assigned, I have branched out my personal learning network. Not only have I connected with more peers in the university, but I have also made new connections through blogs. I have found more students and teachers through our blog assignments and have kept up with their blogs if they held my attention. I have also been volunteering and expanding my PLN with the teachers in the school I have been at. Not only am I learning new ways to teach, but I am also learning new things myself to teach. Personal Learning Networks are so important for many reasons. Not only does it give you someone to go to when you have educational questions, but you can also keep up with them to see what is working for their classroom. I hope to keep expanding my PLN through Twitter, Blogger and other social medias.

Problem: Many teachers have been hired simply because they have a college degree.
Solution: Recruit teachers who graduated in the top third of their class

I completely agree with this. Not only do some people take advantage of their degree and float through school, but some people didn't even go to school for education. I agree that college professors doesn't necessarily have to take educational based classes, but K-12 in my opinion should. I don't feel as if a science major should be able to walk into a high school classroom without taking educational psychology, or other classes that teach you how to teach. With college graduates that graduate in the top third of their class, it makes the possibility of the students to succeed.

Problem: Teachers who have had more experience than new teachers will always be chosen first, simply because of seniority.
Solution: To make teaching a profession by treating all teachers as equals, and allowing teachers to earn their levels of achievement.

I fully agree that this is a problem. Not only is it not fair, but just because a teacher has experience doesn't mean that they don't have something to bring to the table. I do think that all teachers should be created as equal. I do not know how most people decide to hire between two candidates, but I think they should maybe present a lesson plan to figure out which would be the better fit.

Problem: Teaching has not been treated or respected as if it is a profession, even by educators themselves.
Solution: Teachers will have a self established board to "police the profession" by making standards and "providing mechanisms to remove incompetent teachers".

This is a huge problem. I hear so many people tell me that I am not going to make money or my profession won't be good enough. The teachers that tell me that, should automatically be removed from their position at the school. There are so many newer teachers begging for that position that would be glad to take it. Having a "police" would be an awesome idea.

This blog has put many things in perspective for me and really made me think about my career. I am so excited to go into this field and love my job.

I didn't see any of the benefits of teaching with technology. After learning and being able to use technology in my volunteering with elementary schools, I will use it. Not only does technology keep the children engaged and more entertained, but it also contains more information that you can only teach with the internet. For instance, blogging helps your writing skills and also connects you with individuals all over the world. With smaller kids, they can do interactive multimedia on the SmartBoard and utilize their motor skills.
One thing that I will keep the traditional approach on is text books. A lot of teachers have started putting kids text books on their iPads. I think highlighting information helps the kids retain knowledge. Although you can do this on an iPad, I have personally found it an easier way to retain knowledge by reading a book.

Traditional teaching vs Technology

I feel as if there will forever be a debate between teachers with the older way of teaching vs the newer way of teaching. Some people say technology isn't a good teaching tool, and some people absolutely love it. Some of the benefits of technology is that you can have the best of both worlds. You can download textbooks on your iPad, Kindle, laptop or most other electronics. Not only does it engage the kids and hold their interest more, but the children can take virtual field trips. They can experience other cultures, other ways of learning from other children, and they can expand their personal learning network.

I think this project/blog post would have been perfect for this class, because it would influence some of the students that are on the edge about it. We could have made a customized pro/con chart.
She mentioned how the technology has changed and has made it easier to become more kid friendly. It also has been easier to find other blogs of children outside of the United States for her classes to connect with. Kathy seems like an excellent teacher and was very brave ten years ago bringing in blogging to her classroom.

This blog post makes me really excited to start my teaching career. Not only is blogging a good way for kids to connect with others outside of their normal circle, but its also a good way for them to learn how to use a computer, and basic websites as well. I think blogging expands a childs' mind and makes them think with a different perspective.

Hi! My name is Hannah Tolbert and I am also a student at the University of South Alabama studying Elementary Education. I absolutely loved the idea of the race! Not only is it very cute, but its also a fun way to get them outside faster! It's also very cool how other people got involved, making it more fun for the kids! I hope I come up with a good plan like this whenever I start teaching!
This video was very touching. I feel as if the educators should step up for the disabled children. Not only are we gaining experience, and pushing our own limits, but we are becoming the gateway into their future. Imagine teaching a child how to read braille. How awesome would that be to know you helped that child? Of course teaching children without disabilities is something you should be proud of as well, but disabilities bring on challenges and it would be incredible to overcome those challenges.

Apple is by far one of my favorite companies. Not only have they created the top selling phones, computers, and tablets in the world, but they also go the extra mile. Say you are blind, or have a hard time seeing. Apple has created many ways where you can still use technology. They have created voice over, where the computer or other electronic source reads to you. Also, they have made it easy to enlarge your cursor and text and make the contrast higher or lower as you choose. Apple helps their consumers with hearing impairments many ways as well. They have an app called Facetime that is automatically stored in your Apple product. You can physically see the other person on the other side so they can sign to you. They have also created a screen flash, where your computer screen with flash at you when it needs your attention. And of course, like many other products, Apple offers closed captions where someone can read whatever is being played.

It is a device that types braille onto a piece of paper, while telling you what you are writing. This is also helpful for someone who does not know braille. Not only is it a way for the blind to use technology in a classroom, but it also saves files, transfers files, and receives files.

He showed us how to unlock the iPad, how to navigate around his home screen, how to use iBooks, and much more. The iPad will read out loud to you to help you to be able to access the apps. I found this very interesting and cool to be able to learn how to use voice over.

At the beginning of the semester, he took a survey to see where the children in the classroom stood. I found it very disturbing that the children didn't know common stuff like the country they lived in, their address, their phone number, etc. The project that this video was based around was very unique. The students first made a story about how they were a balloon taking a trip. The stories would start out by the students talking about how they are getting helium put in them. They then made a wiki and used photos from their classrooms Flickr. Then, they used a free online software to make a book cover and used the embedded code to put it into their blog. Finally, they did an actual experiment. They had professionals come in from outside of the school and built a camera for the balloon. They then set it off and were able to track the balloon as to how high it was, and they could also see view from the balloons perspective. Brian Crosby and his children in his classroom have an awesome personal learning network going on. They talk often via Skype with other students in other countries. He allows kids to learn on their own and it makes them feel more involved. He had a student that was diagnosed with leukemia and she had to study at home because her immune system was poor. She would Skype in so she could become a part of her class. That just shows how is goes above and beyond for his students.
Sam Pane, a 5th grade teacher in Omaha, Nebraska, had a very unique way of teaching. In the video Super Digital Citizen, he had the children make a internet superhero. Some children designed their superhero to stop internet bullying. They built comic strips by taking pictures of themselves and using text bubbles. They also met all the English standards doing this. I have personally never seen anything like this before and it really shows how unique you can get with your teaching.

In Dean Shareski's Project Based Learning video, he states what PBL is. He then goes on about how he and 2 other teachers incorporated English and History classes together. They went to their supervisor to present how they can incorporate Canadian English and Canadian History. They constantly push their students to do better. The students are also learning about issues such as state issues, poverty, and other issues. It is really interesting how they can incorporate two classes into one.

Roosevelt Elementary seems like an excellent school. All of the teachers have incorporated project based learning into their teaching. Not only does it help the students become more engaged, it also makes them learn more efficiently. A mother had a testimonial speech in the video stating that project based learning is working for her child. She also stated something that I haven't thought of before. Having project based learning at an early age benefits them by taking away the intimidation of speaking in front of others. In most PBL activities, the student must present to the class.

Kathy Cassidy really took a risk ten years ago when she started using technology in her first grade classroom. In her video, little kids.. Big potential with Dr. Strange, she talks about how her students react to their blogs and comments on their blogs. It acknowledged the students in Alabama that comment on her students blogs, and makes me feel like I am encouraging her students. Having a blog allows them to be better writers and use grammar correctly. It also makes it easier on the students because they can go home and practice on their blog in their own spare time.
Being involved in technology helps the parents as well. As stated in the first interview, parents really like the internet and progress that their children are making. They are able to get online to see their childs' blog. One of the quotes that really stuck out to me was, "why would a child want to write on a piece of paper, when they can write on their blog and the whole world can see it?” Some children will have 100+ views on a blog post and it really encourages the kids to keep doing better. She also talked about how we can't teach children the way we taught them 10-15 years ago. Technology is a main part of most children's everyday lives, in and out of school. In the second interview, she talked about how to get started. You start with what you're interested in. For instance, if you're interested in photography, you can start creating your personal learning network by connecting with other people interested in photography. Kathy is very inspirational and I really look up to her.
My name is Hannah. I am in school at the University of South Alabama studying Elementary Education. You seem like a very smart individual. It is very smart to understand how to process your time in order to get things done, especially in college. It should be a lot easier since you're already practicing how to do that. Also, college is very stressful as well. Keep up the good work!

According to the ASCD website, the seven essentials for project based learning is:

1. A Need to Know

2. A Driving Question

3. Student Voice and Choice

4. 21st Century Skills

5. Inquiry and Innovation

6. Feedback and Revision

7. A Publicly Presented Project

I also enjoyed the quote in the beginning of the post, "Some "projects" border on busywork. Others involve meaningful inquiry that engages students' minds."

In the text video, Project-Based Learning for Teachers, a few things stood out to me. A few quotes in particular caught my attention. “The question is deep and requires students to complete an end product to share their learning with others” I think it is important to share their learnings with other students. I will definitely take advantage of sharing in my classroom, because everyone learns differently. For example, a student might know the ins and outs of a certain topic, however, another student might know how to put that topic to use in some kind of experiment. One of the other quotes that caught my attention was, “While meeting standards and creating an authentic product, students learn: collaboration skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and career and life skills.” Not only is it important to meet your standards as a teacher, we are also better preparing our students for this new world of technology and experiments. I think it is important to always keep that in mind.

I enjoyed the video of ‘High School Teachers Meet the Challenges of PBL Implementation. Not only was it real teachers being interviewed with made it more personal, it also was very informative. They are redesigning 30+ classes, to bring project based learning to the classrooms.

I also enjoyed it because the teachers are really putting in an effort in learning how to incorporate PBL into their own study. Also, bringing students into the video, helped me see how much PBL is taking over and helping students be more engaged. It was very interesting seeing how the math teachers are letting the students make games when they are talking about probability. As a person who doesn’t enjoy math as much as some other subjects, I feel if math was like that in my school, I would also enjoy it a lot more. At the end of the video, they showed the statistics of how PBL is helping their school. They had a 15% increase in students passing the High School Proficiency Exam in reading and an 18% increase in students passing the Algebra 2 end-of-course exam. This alone makes me more excited to bring PBL into my own classrooms and hopefully help children succeed the way the teachers at Sammamish High School did.

In the video PBL: what motivates students today, the kids were very cute. The students were asked a simple question: What motivates you to do good in school? The answers vary from getting praise from their teachers, having good grades to get into business school, wouldn’t be able to go to baseball games, and getting grounded. Some of the ways the teachers are rewarding their students in giving them candy, money, and letting them walk around outside. Some go even farther and let the student eat lunch with him/her. I think it is important to reward your students for their hard work, especially younger students. School needs to be fun and rewarding.

When I first read this title, Two Students solved the case of the Watery Ketchup by Designing a New Cap, I thought, “Really?” After reading about it, I think it is really cool. Not only are Tyler Richards and Jonathan Thompson taking time out of their schedules to create this ketchup lid, they are also getting recognized by a really large new site, PBS. They also got to eventually start selling the ketchup bottle lid for $3. This is very inspirational, and nothing is too little. They will be recognized by colleges all over, simply for putting themselves out there.

Not only was he an amazing educator, he was also a fighter. Most people are pessimistic about death, but he was optimistic. He brought out his best lectures knowing that his time would come soon. He was constantly trying to pursue his childhood dreams, and he often reminds me of myself. We were assigned to watch his last lecture video, and my only reaction is, "wow." He was very appreciative of the people thats helped him along the way and acknowledges them in this video. Often I see people get successful in their career and they forget about all the people that put in extra time to help them along the way. He also appreciated students imaginations, and allowed them to think outside of the box. I am thankful that Randy took on this different way of teaching and let us use his curriculum as a stepping stone. I will definitely be watching more of his videos as I get closer to my profession.
My groups project for students was for them to use project based learning to create a presentation on the solar system. We incorporated iCurio, and SmartBoard. At the end of the project, each student will participate in their group and present the planet that was assigned to them.
Hi Elizabeth,
My name is Hannah. I am a student at the University of South Alabama in the College of Education. I really enjoyed your slideshow. The book ‘Deep Blue’ seems like another version of ‘The Hunger Games,’ and thats one of my favorite series. I also love getting caught up in a book like you did with this one. You made it seem very interesting! Keep up the good work!
Hannah
Elizabeth’s blog post was about a book called ‘Deep Blue’ by Jennifer Donnely. She created a slideshow and presented the book in a professional way. She stated the genre, theme, main characters in detail, plot, and much more. She also included a brief summary about the book. It seems as if its a ‘Hunger Games’ type of book for younger children.

My name is Hannah Tolbert. I am a student at the University of South Alabama, studying elementary education. I really enjoyed the blog post! I didn't know that Annabelle was a prequel to The Conjuring! I personally don't like scary movies, I get too scared! You're very brave! You actually make me want to see it, because I wouldn't have thought it was scary but also sad! I look forward to reading more blog posts!
Laney’s blog post was about the hit horror film, Annabelle. She made it seem very interesting and didn’t give it away too much. She seemed like she did research as well, because she mentioned that it was a prequel for The Conjuring. I’m not sure if that was in the movie, or if she found it out on her own. I noticed this blog was posted in October of 2014, so hopefully she gets on her blog still to check her comments.
Samuel's blog post was about his passion for basketball. There are plenty of people who say that technology in the classroom is not a good idea, but after learning all of these facts, I completely disagree.

The video Using iMovie and the Alabama Virtual Library in Kindergarten really opened my eyes to the progress children are making. It's crazy to think that kindergartners are using iMovie, a program most college students have a hard time using. My class, EDM 310, recently had a book trailer due and it was by far one of the toughest assignments so far. Dr. Strange mentioned that the kindergarteners should explain how they use iMovie, and I think that would be an awesome idea. Not only would it open up the college level students eyes, it would also encourage us to learn more and be more involved with technology. Another thing brought up in the video, was the Alabama Virtual Library. Not only is it a completely free resource, you can also choose from student resources or adult resources. It is also very easy to get one. You can either go to any Alabama public library, or access it online via geo-location.

In the video We All Become Learners, Michele Bennet states, "Everyone becomes a learner, and everyone becomes a teacher." Not only can we teach the children how to use certain apps or websites, they can also teach us since they can use these resources outside of school. She also brought up Padlet, an online dashboard you can discuss information on with other people simply by giving them the URL. In my class, we have used this website and I really enjoyed it. I feel as if it would make group projects easier for all ages.

iPads in the Classroom was probably my favorite video assigned to us for this blog post. One of the teachers featured stated that the children get to "take a virtual field trip everyday." I have never thought of it like that and it really opened my eyes. Imagine you are studying a certain country. You can easily watch Youtube videos of the country, research the different cultures, and act as if you are there in person. Children can also use iPads for more than just games and research. If you are a kindergarten teacher you can get the children to spell words out on a magnetic alphabet app. If the child has a special need, they can use the iPad to speak for them. It also makes students more involved, because lets be honest, who doesn't love iPads?

In Top 10 Reasons to Use Technology in Education: iPad, Tablet, Computer, Listening Centers, Sheryl Nussbuam-Beach said, "Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don't use technology will be replaced by those who do." I think that is a very harsh, but true statement. It's the 21st century, this is what is expected of teachers in the United States and plenty more countries. There was also 10 reasons to use technology:

1. Students love it

2. It engages the four key components to learning- active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, connection to real world groups.

3. Professional development- basic computing skills

4. Makes life easier for the teachers- tests online, lesson plans

5. Improves tests scores- works at their own pace and doesn't allow them to be held back because of other students

6. Helps students with low attention spans- ADD and ADHD students

7. Learn from the experts- can learn from the best teachers around the world

8. Encourages homework- can take tests online and have the teacher for homework help

9. Saves money- initial investment but frees up the teacher because they have more teachers online

10. Removes obstacles- amplifying system

Anthony Capps, a third grade teacher, seems like a wonderful teacher. He gave me a lot of insight on what I will be doing once I start teaching a class.

In this video, Anthony gave insight on what project based learning looks like to him. The goal of a good project has to have "student interest, involves the community, and is driven by content." I think it is very important to keep the teacher requirements and Alabama College and Career Ready Standards in mind while planning the project. He gave a really good example of one of the projects that he did in his classroom. The students were assigned to write letters to the Congressmen about women fighting in open combat. Not only was this fun for them, but it met reading, writing, and social studies standards. They did research on historical females to start off their research. Not only was this interesting for Anthony, it was fun for the kids. They would go home and talk to their parents or family friends that served and got their opinion on the idea. Some of the kids actually got replies as well! I think that was an awesome project, because it was more than just writing letters.

Another project Anthony talked about, was that he let his students make a narration of them being kids in Afghanistan to study the country. The focal point of each story was different. Some kids focused on the food, some on fashion, warfare, etc. What made it stand out to me, was that the kids got to choose. This gives them more ownership and more pride. I think most students has had to write a paper that was assigned to everyone in the class. Papers need originality, and with kids' imagination, it makes it fun for the teacher too.

Two tools Anthony talked about was iCurio and Discovery Education. They both seemed very useful.
iCurio is an online tool that allows students to safely search websites that pull educational material only. It also gives children the opportunity to become organized with the option of putting stuff in certain folders, etc. Not only is the website kid friendly, students with disabilities can also use this website. If a child is blind, the website will read to you.
Discovery Education brings extra information to the kids. If a teacher doesn't know too much information on certain aspects, the students can search for videos that shows them more in depth to it. Also, students seem to remember and learn better if its a visual thing.

Two things that Anthony said really stuck out to me. In the video UseTech Don'tTeachIt, Anthony says, "You shouldn't teach it (technology). It shouldn't be a part of your curriculum." Instead, we should build off one another. You do one thing one week, and the next week they will use last weeks assignment and this weeks. In the video Strange Tips for Teachers, Capps stated, "Let your work become a fun experience for you." I think that is probably one of the most important things. If you aren't having fun teaching, the kids won't have fun learning. You learn along side of them, and it makes it fun for them.

Lesson:
-How it fits into your year.
-How are you going to unfold the unit.
-How are you planning your week to ensure you're getting everything done you need to.
-How do you deliver to students daily.
